General Geography and Population

Kansas City is the largest city in the state of Missouri when it comes to the general population and average area covered. According to the most recent survey conducted by the United States Census Bureau, the city is home to over 490 000 US residents. This, in turn, translates to it being the 38th most populated city in the United States. In general, Kansas City serves as the dense core of the larger metropolitan area. The area coverage of Kansas City mostly lies within Jackson County with some portions spilling into Cass, Clay, and Platte Counties. The City is surrounded by Kansas City, Kansas, and Johnson and Wyandotte Counties. Kansas City was founded at the confluence of the Missouri River in 1830. It was then known as the Kansas Port. Historically, the town was incorporated in June of 1850. This led to the establishment of Kansas territories. Kansas City is the 23rd largest city in the United States, covering an area of about 319.03 square miles. Kansas City serves as one of the two County seats of Jackson County together with Independence. The city is divided into several neighborhoods, including the 18th and Vine District on the east, the River Market District to the North, and the Country Club Plaza to the South.
